The Hawk
Today I was going out my back door to work when I spotted my neighbor holding a camera in his hand. He motioned to me to be still, then pointed to a Hawk, munching on a pigeon.
I think this one is a male red tail hawk, if anyone could verify it I would appreciate it. I never thought that Hawks would kill pigeons. Field mice, squirrels, or an small rabbit maybe, but attack other birds?

Franny,..send the pics to someone at the PA Fish and Game Commission. I guess they can ID it. FWIW, I don't think its a Red tail,..it looks to small. (I know,..I had one buzz my ambulance last year!)
Second, when I worked for Bryn Mawr Hospital's Medic Unit, I saw a Peregrine swoop down from one of the medical offices and take out a pigeon in mid-air. They'll eat pigeons, rats, mice, squirrels, etc. That's why the City tries to encourage them to nest on the skyscrapers and City Hall.
That's picture proof that the John Heinz Wildlife Center is finally healthy again!

I had a very similar experience last year in my backyard with what I also believed to be a red tail. Mine was really big. He was trying to get at something he saw beneath my neighbor's deck but without success. Very impressive creature! The beak is so cruel looking - hooked and sharp. And the talons - very fierce indeed.
So true Lynne. This hawk (Or one like it) has been seen high in the sky above Clifton Heights and Drexel Hill now for a few years. I read Hawks live for several years, and are attacked by Crows.
I seem to see hawks everywhere I go. In Havertown where I live; on the Blue Route perching on trees or flying overhead; perched on fenceposts on Darby Road and near Lamb Tavern; all I have to do is look up in the sky and there they are. My husband has taken to calling me the hawk lady! Are they really that common or am I just seeing things?
